How to measure a downstem

This is where most people order wrong, so read this first. You need two things:

Joint size. Most bongs take an 18.8mm downstem that accepts a 14.5mm bowl , this is the standard 18.8mm > 14.5mm setup. Measure the opening on your bong's joint, or check your bong's product listing. If a 20p coin almost fits the opening, it's 18.8mm; if it's noticeably smaller, you're likely on 14.5mm. See our insta for infographic

Length. Measure from the bottom of the ground glass joint to the tip of the stem. If you're replacing a broken one, measure the old stem the same way. Too long and it'll sit on the base of your bong; too short and it won't reach the water. When in doubt, size down slightly, a stem that clears the water by a touch still works, one jammed against the glass doesn't.

Diffused or open-ended?

Open-ended stems give a direct, unrestricted pull. Diffused stems break smoke into smaller bubbles through slits at the tip, which cools it and smooths the hit noticeably β€” for most people it's the single cheapest upgrade you can make to a basic bong. The trade-off: slits can clog with resin faster, so pair one with proper cleaning habits.
